During my education at Erskine Seminary, I was forced to take a full year of Biblical Hebrew. The class was taught by the legendary, conservative Bible scholar, William Kuykendall. At one point in the term, we were studying word variations. One of the students spoke up: "Dr. Kuykendall, don't all these word variations and changes pretty much prove that our ancestors evolved?"
After a long silence, Dr. Kuykendall icily responded: "Perhaps your ancestors evolved. Mine most certainly did not!"
When we come to the Person of Jesus Christ, we face a Lord Who never evolved. He was, and is, and always will be the same, glorious Lord. Heb.13:8 says point blank: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever."
True, He was descended from fallible human ancestors; the genealogies in Matt.1 and Luke 3 are proof of that. He experienced change and growth and personal development in His humanity (Luke 2:52).
But, His identity as Lord was announced even on the night of His birth (Luke 2:11).
Throughout the course of the Advent and Christmas season, Christians rightly affirm the Divine sending of the Messiah by way of the virgin Mary. The 2nd Person of the Trinity added to Himself a human nature and came to a fallen world, so that human beings could be saved by Him. There was no evolution involved.
He has risen from the dead and ascended into heaven. All of this is the expression of Divine power rather than an impersonal process of evolution.
Christians are saved by the grace of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph.2:1-9). The unevolved Lord remains Supreme Lord in His identity and Person. Therefore, nothing can separate genuine Christians from the love of God through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom.8:39).
May we daily devote ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is always stable and holy and wise and loving because He is the same yesterday, today and even forever.
